Rain of blossoms by Losmios Rain of blossoms by Losmios
Image belongs to *karliashi if you want to use it for anything, you have to clear it with her! I allow images to be used on non-profit blogs as long as you DO NOT EDIT them by adding text and graphics to them! And as long as you add my name to it!

Finally finished my commision for *karliashi who was pleased with the result, wich of colours epeased me! :) It was as usual made in Photoshop CS with my Wacom Intuos.

A trick for creating a nice bark texture - do a lot of texturing on the bark, with readymade photoshop textures or ones you download, and do some paintwork yourself. Then duplicate your layer, go to Filters - Stylize (?) and choose Emboss (great trick for rocks, mountaints and dirt texture etc as well!) After that you can play with opacity and layer options to get a really nice gnarly texture for your tree trunk! Don't forget to do silouhette editing on the trunk once you a done!

To create the cherrytree blossoms I made a seemless pattern on cherryflowers in photoshop. I then used the pattern clone to draw the flowers with help of my flower pattern. It is better than creating a texture/brush you use with the brushes as they are transperant and loose colordetails you've made!
See how to make a seemless pattern here.

I can upload the pattern if you are interested? If you need a different size, just open the pattern, rescale it to a size you think will be alright, and save it.

Don't know how to add a new pattern? Go to Edit, and then there should be something named Set pattern or something similar. A window will open that allows you to name the pattern and then you are done!

(Anyone feel free to tell me correct photoshop translations! I have Swedish photoshop so I have to wing it! :aww:)

WOW!! This is soooo beautiful! I have a cherry blossome tree tattoo on my side, and i love horses! The petals and flowers are very realistic too. Oh and i read a comment mentioning the crest of the horse, and actually if this is a stallion the crest is perfect and shows strength :]

I have to say... I'm a HUGE fan of your work, but this is way below your usual standard. The background is super simple, the lighting definitely looks like you just winged it, and the tree is, um... an alien. Sorry, but cherry trees should look like [link] or like [link] . The blossoms don't cling to the main branches like that, they grow on twigs which grow on smaller branches which come off of the main branches. Big branches like those are long past their bud-producing years.

The cherry blossoms are only falling on the near side of the tree, and they appear to be hovering on top of the grass. The tree's roots don't look connected to the ground-- the grass doesn't grow up in front of them-- and the largest of the green faerie things is obviously used twice.

The unicorn's anatomy is way off, even accounting for stylistic changes-- his crest rises about twice as high as it should, and his rump looks amature at best (no muscle or bone definition, no clear hip joint). His markings look painted on; they should smudge into the rest of the coat.

The mane/tail, horn, stars, and cherry blossoms are the only things which looks GORGEOUS, as everything Losmios should be. Compared to any of your more recent images like Dark and Stormy, Grey Bonfire, or Storming, this is seriously underdone. Sorry if this came across seriously critical, but trust me, I usually adore your art. If you're going to do full-detail commissions, though, they should be up to your usual standard.

hay there, I'm the commissioner of this piece, and I'll give you a little bit of insight from my perspective :) This is essentially for a tattoo, and I gave her specific requests. Los was extremely accommodating throughout the process. She sent me several wips, sketches, and even the lines. There was a lot of communication during the commission, and she always cleared things with me before the next step. When the image was finished, she sent it to me, and asked if I was happy with it, well before she uploaded it to DA. So it's not really a matter a meh job on the commission. Critiques are always good, i understand where you are coming from. But I am actually really happy with this :aww: and even more happy as a customer receiving great service really.

I'm sorry to hear you do not think I'm up to par. I would contest a lot of your feedback though - I simply do not agree on many of some the things you say as I've one extesive research and refrencing on this piece. The one thing I do agree on the fairy - it does not look good. I have obviously rushed that part - something I always advice others against and I should take another look at it.
As far as the tree goes - it was a designrequest for that shape. Wether it is so in real life or not, when a cherrytree. The petals (which I also researched) sometimes rest on top of the grasstraws, sometimes sink in inbetween. That is how I figured it. If it looks as wrong as you say though, I shall have another look at that too.
The equine anatomy I do not agree on - The angle IS hard to pull off, but I used a ref and if anything, I have lessened the sevrety of it, and think it looks rather nice. Maybe I will change oppinion in a while, but right now, I am happy with it and do not think it is below my standard a sin relation to the size and ratio aspect of the image. As for the rump - it IS actually very worked - the pattern just hides alot of it by mottling it up for the eye - it is more visable in bigger versions, but for obvious reasons, those versions are for the clients only.

You are in complete right to your opinion, but I would wish that you save it for when I -ASK- for real feedback on an image ( I always use the feedback wanted setting on an image when I want critique) - in this case I feel it was really more of a critique on me personally - you do not think I've done a job properly for my client. That is between the client and myself and your thoughts on it should have been adressed to me personally in a note or an e-mail rather than to the artwork in this instance in this image. At least, that is how I woudl have adressed it. Please feel free to note me on any further thoughts you have on my response so we can discuss it if you'd like.

Just to finni

Hey, thanks for responding... sorry if I came off harsh; it might have been misplaced frustration toward artists who do a meh job on commissions. I have a lot of cherry trees where I live, so that struck me as odd initially. I guess I was disappointed somewhat by the piece and frustrated that you seemed to be getting doused with unlimited praise. That was harsh of me... sorry if it came off as an attack on you; it really wasn't meant that way. Thanks for responding so reasonably.
Losmios Featured By Owner Aug 1, 2009
Well I can understand that particular frustration, I just hope that if it comes along again, and you have some feedback to offer, please ask me if I'd like to hear it before offering it - cos most times I do want to hear it. As long as we all play nice. ;)

The color palette you used is perfect, Los. I love the purples and pinks and the light reflection in the mountains and grass. The haze makes it look like a humid evening with a storm rolling in.

Thanks for sharing the information about the blossoms and the bark! I'm definitely going to be giving these things a look later on! I hate painting bark, because it always seems to look overdone no matter how careful I am.

The character is lovely, too. :D I'm a big fan of those high stockings.

this is very lovely losmios, My only recommendation would be to add some detail to the top of the clouds even though they are in the background so they look less cartoony. I feel like it conflicts with the other elements in your work. Other than that, lovely.
